About World PM2022
World PM2022 Congress & Exhibition made its first visit to Lyon, France from 9 to 13 October 2022.
With a rich history stretching back more than 2000 years, Lyon has taken shape over time, presenting visitors today with neighbourhoods that have a unique atmosphere and reflect the city’s evolution. Lyon is the first Europe’s city-break destination, the world capital of gastronomy and the most popular business tourism destination, outside Paris.
World PM2022 Congress & Exhibition took place at the Lyon Convention Centre, in the exceptional environment of the Cité Internationale designed by Renzo Piano in a privileged setting between the river Rhône and the Tête d’Or Park.
The Powder Metallurgy World Congress is only held in Europe once every six years, which is an essential destination for the international PM community to meet its suppliers, producers, and end-users and to discover the latest innovations in PM technology.
A high number of abstracts from across the Powder Metallurgy community, made for a positive number of technical sessions and attracted delegates and visitors from several key end user sectors, which allowed for an active 4-days of presentations, discussions, and networking opportunities.
Being an all-topic event, representing all areas of powder metallurgy, helped to attract an international audience of attendees from over 44 countries, including the Far East, Africa, and the Americas. WorldPM2022 event has attracted over 300 Oral and Poster presentations with attendance in excess of 1000 participants.
After 2 years of online events, participants enjoyed meeting again on Sunday evening during the Welcome reception, sponsored by Höganäs, with drinks and live music.
Running in parallel to the technical sessions was the World PM Exhibition, where over 100 companies exhibit, representing all parts of the PM supply chain.
Lionel Aboussouan, EPMA Executive Director said “Lyon has proved a popular and well-connected location, where people were really happy to meet again after the last virtual years. The diverse technical programme and sold-out exhibition has helped to attract attendees from several key sectors, who want to learn more about what PM can do for their applications and industries. We would like to thank all the EPMA supporters and stakeholders who have assisted in making this event a success!”
The Technical Program Committee Chairs, Prof Didier Bouvard (University Grenoble Alpes, France) and Prof José Torralba (University Carlos III de Madrid, IMDEA Materials Institute, Spain) thanked the work of all the technical program committee members who reviewed over 350 technical papers.
The opening Plenary session opened with the two Congress chairs Mrs Adeline Riou (Erasteel, France) and Mr Didier Bouvard (University Grenoble Alpes, France). The plenary was held with the participation of the 3 PM Associations’ Presidents (MPIF, APMA and EPMA) and the two following plenary speakers: Mrs Anne Thenaisie from SAFRAN “Safran Additive Manufacturing Campus, towards industrial metal additive manufacturing serving the carbon-free aeronautics of the future” and Mr Fredrik Emilson Group President & CEO of Höganäs “Höganäs Sustainability transition, a race against time”.
Following on from the key speakers was the annual EPMA Thesis Competition; the winning thesis for the PhD category was Dr. Techn. Lukas Kaserer, BSc. MSc, (University of Innsbruck) “Laser Powder Bed Fusion of the Refractory Metal Molybdenum Material and Process Development”.
After the Opening session, the World PM Exhibition opened with over 100 exhibiting companies, who represented all parts of the PM supply chain.
An innovation for the 2022 event was the proposal of Industry Corner Meetings during the breaks inside the exhibition itself. A stage and a screen allowed speakers to do a 30 minutes presentation, open to all participants. Industry Corner presentations turned out successful with many participants around the spot.
On Monday evening, the Awards and Posters reception, sponsored by MIBA, rewarded the DSA and Fellowship winners of 2022.
The EPMA Board and Council’s Fellowship Award helps to recognise the significant contribution to PM industry development from the scientific/academic community. The EPMA Fellowship Award not only provides a fantastic recognition from the PM community for such tremendous work, but also looks to exemplify the continued involvement in PM science and technologies.
The 2022 Fellowship Awards were presented to:
- Prof. LUIS M LLANES PITARCH (Catalunya Universitat Politecnica UPC, Barcelona, Spain)
- Prof. Dr.-Ing. THOMAS WEIßGÄRBER (Fraunhofer Institut – IFAM, Dresden, Dresden)
Distinguished Service Awardees for 2022 were:
- GEORG BREITENMOSER Dipl. Ing. ETH, MBA (Parmaco Metal Injection Molding AG, Fischingen, Switzerland)
- MICHAEL KREHL (MTSG Consulting, Schwangau, Germany)
- Mr PETER KJELDSTEEN (Sintex, Denmark)
Due to Covid restrictions and previous “online” congresses, we were not able to distribute those rewards physically in 2021 and 2020. So the past winners were also part of the ceremony and received their rewards this year at the reception.
The Awards and Posters reception concluded with a presentation of Yokohama, will held the next World PM event in 2024.
The Annual Congress Gala dinner took place at the Cirque Imagine. Attendees enjoyed this time of networking and socializing while being entertained by impressive Circus numbers during a nice seated dinner. Some participants said “this was the best Gala dinner they had ever attended”.
The Congress concluded on Friday with 3 Industry site visits, CETIM/MANUTECH company in Saint Etienne, EDF nuclear plant and the Synchrotron in Grenoble.
